Jeffrey Sanker Article In Noize Magazine

Ask any party boy to name the top promoters on the scene, and the name Jeffrey Sanker will be at the top of the list. His career spans three decades starting with the New York club scene during the halcyon days of Studio 54. His parties happen in the country’s hottest hot spots—Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Miami and Las Vegas. He’s also brought some of the Circuit’s best-known DJs to parties during Gay Days in Orlando. The super-producer known simply as “The Man” has consistently come up with the baddest parties for the fiercest crowd.
How does he do it? According to Sanker, “You have to make everything like a show. That is why I feel I am more of an impresario than a promoter.” It also means keeping up with the changes in nightlife.
Sanker is perhaps best known for White Party Palm Springs, which has long held the crown of largest gay dance event west of the Mississippi. More recently, he has been extending his brand into some of the hottest clubs in L.A. Every month a new party seems to crop up with “Jeffrey Sanker presents” emblazoned on top of it. But these are not your uncle’s Circuit-style parties. He might add some décor, and he always has the top DJs at the turntables, but he has realized that the younger party boys are self-lubricating with that old standby, alcohol.
The music is hip-hop and pop, the dance floors are smaller, and there are “chill” spaces where the city’s A-list can see and be seen. The focus has shifted from a night of sweaty dancing to an evening being with your friends and making new ones. In fact, at one recent event, the dance floor was filled—but no one was dancing. Instead, the boys were just holding the latest trendy martini and chatting each other up. Shirts firmly remained on torsos.
A lot of the Sanker “magic touch” can be attributed to the perception that if his name is on the event, you’re guaranteed a fun, sexy crowd (shirts on or off). One relatively new event, Fresh Fridays at WeHo’s Eleven Lounge, has a line down the block each week. “I create Donald Trump-style events,” Sanker said in a recent interview. “I want to give only the best of everything: the best DJs, venues, performers and themes. That is why they keep coming back.”
Sanker’s signature event, White Party, is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year. Sanker points out that drink sales have gone up 25% in the past few years, but he likes to keep this one Old School. Each event is in a “big room” where the focus is on serious dancing, performances, and connecting with the crowd. For the twentieth anniversary, he is planning an over-the-top event. However, despite having big-name headliners like J-Lo and Toni Braxton in the past, do not expect the usual rumor mill of who might be the special performer this year. He is done with that.
“If you want to see Cher, go to Vegas,” Sanker quipped. (He’s been there with a roadshow White Party in the 24-hour town.) This year, he is focusing on bringing big, innovative shows to Palm Springs that will blow the crowd away, without any of the anticipation (or drama) of an unannounced diva showing up—or not. He was the first to add Cirque du Soleil-type performances to dance events. Previous years have included the L.A. Philharmonic backing up Flava; live horses; acrobats; and insane pyrotechnics. No matter what he comes up with, you know it will be exciting—even without one of those big-name (and big-maned) divas.
DJ-wise he is also mixing it up. This year, he’s going international by importing Oscar Velasquez from Mexico City for Friday night and Ana Paula from Rio closing the main event. He’s also nurturing the hottest young DJs on the scene such as the Perry Twins, Casey Alva and Morningstar. The theme for this year’s White Party is “Legion of Superheroes.” To keep with that theme, each event is set up “dynamic duo” style. Every party will have a known DJ along with a fresh face as the sidekick to give the boys a feel for tomorrow’s headliners.
Looking Back & Ahead
Surprisingly, Sanker got the idea to do a dance event in Palm Springs from the lesbian community. In 1987, he felt the New York club scene was moribund. So he moved to Los Angeles, where he initiated a string of successful parties and clubs. His first event at the Palace (now Avalon) brought in 1,800 guys. Based on that success, he was invited to check out The Dinah Shore Weekend, a party for the gals in the Desert during the Dinah Shore Golf Tournament.
When he saw the main event consisted of four speakers and a few balloons, he knew he could do better. His first event was called Wet and Wild and attracted 500 guys. One DJ, Manny Lehman, played all the parties. A year later he changed the name to White Party and its popularity exploded. Today, nearly 20,000 people descend on the town during White Party Week. It takes over 300 workers and $1 million to produce this marathon of dance and camaraderie.
When asked about the future of the gay dance scene, Sanker would like to remind the new generation that the gay community has always danced. Dance has been an important element of socializing and feeling a sense of community. He hopes that with themes younger boys can relate to and their favorite DJs, he can continue to attract them to a big event like White Party. Once there, he feels they will embrace and understand our communal need to dance and will propel the scene into the future.
So what if some of the older Circuit boys are doing cruises rather than parties these days? Or that the younger generation is restlessly looking for something different? Sanker has continued to be successful in creating the best club and party experience possible—and that’s what he intends to do, wherever the prevailing winds blow. By doing so he keeps reminding us of our need to connect in the place that has always been an integral part of the gay experience: the dance floor.

Interview with DJ Ranny
Perry Twins: Ranny, how did you first get invloved in DJ'ing?
Ranny: I've always been into music and started going out to clubs when I was 11 (in Brazil), but only later on, in 2000, I decided to act on this hobby by making mash ups on my computer and posting them online. All of a sudden I started getting a lot of great feedback from DJs from all over saying they were playing them, which made me very happy. That's when I decided to take it to the next level and started making my own mixes, and shortly after that people started inquiring for gigs. I had DJ equipment and learned how to mix on my own with the occasional help of professional DJs.
PT: What are your favorite current songs to spin?
Ranny: I love remixed pop songs, and Beyonce's "Single Ladies" is really doing it for me now. Britney's "Circus" is also on heavy rotation, as well as pretty much anything by Lady Gaga. I am also really into tracks like "You used to Hold Me" by D.O.N.S., "Broken Pieces" by Friscia & Lamboy/ Jennifer Carbonell and Joey Negro's "Must Be The Music".
PT: Very cool. What are some of your favorite classics?
Ranny: Oh, I love to throw some classics into my sets, and I even remixed some ("Better Off Alone", "You Used to Hold Me"). I absolutely love Angelina's "Release Me" and "I Don't Need Your Love", "Show Me Love" by Robin S. and Fragma's "Toca's Miracle". I could go on and on with the list... Alex Gaudino feat. Crystal Waters - "Destination Unknown". I also get request for my mix of "Bob Sinclar's "Sound of Freedom", with the famous "Everybody's Free" sample by Rozalla.
PT: Love those songs! Do you have a favorite DJ gig thatyou have done?
PT: Where do you see the future of dance music headed?
Ranny: That is a tricky question... Electro refreshed Dance music in a new and exciting way, and it is very in right now. Every now and then a new producer comes out with a fresh new sound and revitalizes the genre over and over again, and we gotta be very thankful for that. I don't know what the future holds, really, but House Music has had its ups and downs throughout the years, and it has survived all the different trends of the industry, so I'm not really worried about that. It's NOT dead.
PT: Tell us about the process of creating and releasing "Epic".
Ranny: I had worked with Rachel on "It's Got to Be Love" and "Repeat Performance", and called her up and asked her if she would be interested in doing a club track. I was very happy when she agreed because I just love her voice. I also wanted people to hear the diva side of her. She definitely brought it big room anthem style, and vocals like that are a great instrument to any remixer.
PT: What are you currently working on?
Ranny: I recently did a mix of Britney's "Circus" and D.O.N.S's "You Used to Hold Me" (a remake of the Ralphi Rosario Classic), and just finished working on tracks for Ceevox, Jeanie Tracy, Denis Cialella/John Feelgood and Jipsta. I don't know when those will be released yet...
PT: Can't wait! Where can we see you DJ next in the upcoming months?
Ranny: I will be at the Roxy this Saturday, Jan. 31st and will get on a plane to Brazil the very next day (where I will be touring). Then I come back for the Carnival party at The Roxy on February 21st. I will also be at Town in DC on April 25th.

Tina Sugandh Breaks Through
Talented Tina Sugandh's hot track, Break Me, is currenlty on The Billboard Club Play Chart and she is definitely breaking in...Perry Twins: You have a song on the new soundtrack for the movie, The Clique. Did you record the song specifically for the movie?
Tina Sugandh: Yes! This was actually a whole new experience for me. I always write my own songs, and I’ve been fortunate enough to write and sing on quite a few soundtracks now like “Around the World in 80 Days”, “Ice Princess”, “Raise Your Voice” and more. I also wrote the lyrics and melody for the songs on my debut album, “TablaGirl” which will be out in January. With the exception of the Christmas Classic, “White Christmas” which I recorded for the “Christmas With the Kranks” soundtrack, this is the very first time I recorded a song written by someone else. I felt somewhat like I was playing a role when I was singing it. It was a new experience, and it’s a really fun song! It feels great to be on the soundtrack!
PT: Do you base any of the songs that you write on personal experiences?
TS: Yes, absolutely. Most of the songs on my album are from personal experiences. “You Without Me” is about someone that I have loved so deeply every minute of every day of my entire life. “Jao” is about evading negativity and negative people and the importance of a peaceful positive state of mind, which I believe is so important to strive to achieve on a daily basis. “Indestructible” is about me being a powerful woman and knowing that no one can mess with me ever again now that I am self aware of my own worth. I really wanted to use my personal experiences to help self-empower those that connect with my lyrics. The only song on my upcoming album that’s not a reflection of who I am is “HisStory”, which is a song that reminds us of some of the highly valuable and healing messages that Gandhi strived to spread throughout the world.
PT: Who are some some of your favorite musical artists right now?
TS: I like all genres of music and I was raised with two different musical cultures, Indian and “American” which I am very grateful for. I go through these stages of immersing myself in artists from America and then switch to nothing but Bollywood soundtracks. Currently, I am addicted to the Bollywood soundtrack for “Tashan”…it’s simply amazing!
PT: Who are your inspirations when it comes to music?
TS: I’ve been performing with my family, The Sugandh Family, every weekend since I was five years old. Hearing the voices and witnessing the performance styles of my mother, father, and sister, Seema, have been my greatest inspirations. They have encouraged, loved, and supported me wholeheartedly throughout my life, and they are all on my debut album as it would not have been complete without them. For example, you can hear Seema’s voice on the intro of “T.here I.s N.o A.lternative”. Her voice is incredible!
PT: Chris Cox did a great job remixing Break Me. Do you have plans to work with him on an upcoming single?
TS: I would love to! I’m so very grateful to him for doing such an awesome job on the remix. I can’t believe it’s up to #7 this week on the Billboard Dance Charts!
PT: What are some similarities between Bollywood and dance music?
TS: Bollywood is all about the dancing! Personally, my favorite thing about dance music is how a really good beat can make you feel elated. The same thing happens to me with the music of Bollywood when I hear the sound of a dhol, tabla, naal, ghatam, and the tons of other percussion that is used. Also, there is a strong visual element to the word
“Bollywood”. When I think of “Bollywood”, I visualize a multitude of vibrant colors, blissful dancing, happiness, joy, and tons of sparkles and glitter. This is similar to what I think of when I visualize the feeling of dancing to an amazing club track. So, I guess the short answer is “rhythm” and “elation”.PT: Can you tell us a little about your experience filming your new music video?
TS: Shooting the video for “Break Me” was incredible. It was a long and hectic and very exciting day, and there was not a moment to lose focus or rest since we decided to challenge ourselves and do all three scenes in one day! We actually have footage of me having 30 minutes to totally change my makeup and oufit. The footage is of three people-one is tugging at my hair trying to straighten it, the other tugging to pull my fake eyelashes off, and the other tugging at my outfit to pin it correctly-all while I’m trying to keep my head straight in order to quickly shove a bite of lasagna in my mouth! Glamourous, huh? We chose to NOT edit that into the behind-the-scenes look at the video (which is currently on youtube). I am really excited for everyone to see the real video because it really sums up who I am. It shows the “Bollywood” me with all the vibrant colors and Bollywood choreography, and then it shows the “Hollywood” me with more slick colors and a hip-hop style of dance, and then the two worlds collide, and “Tina Sugandh” is defined!
PT: Break Me is currently #7 on the Billboard Club Play Chart and rising. Where can your fans see you perform Break Me live?
TS: Being on stage is home to me since I’ve been on it since I was five, and I can not wait to get out there and tour and perform “Break Me!” Right now I’m doing a few private shows, but my management and label are currently working on touring plans, so please do check my website for updates! PT: What do you have planned for the future and what projects are you currently working on?
TS: My album will be released in January, and so we are gearing up to do everything involved in releasing an album such as a press tour and a performance tour. My management is also looking into offers revolving around other passions of mine such as acting (I am signed to CAA), and starting a clothing line that is a genuine reflection of all that I have grown up with….a true “East meets West” clothing line with colorful and sparkly accessories as well such as bindis, bangles, foot jewelry, hand jewelry, and more! I also have done quite a bit of charity work in the past and and I really look forward to contributing more. I know that the more successful I become, the more I can give back. That is definitely the most fulfilling part of seeing my success grow!

Kristine W: The Power Of Music
What hasn't already been said about the Queen of Clubland? Kristine W is an immensely talented performer who shines both on stage and off. We were introduced to her music when One More Try was on the radio back in 1996 and instantly wanted to know more about her and her music. Around the same time Kristine's Land Of The Living album was being released, we found ourselves in Las Vegas looking through a magazine and came across an ad for Kristine W performing nightly at the Las Vegas Hilton. Could this be the same Kristine W whose voice we recently fell in love with? Sure was, and from the opening number of her amazing stage show we knew she was unlike any other performer we have ever seen live. We were so mesmerized by her performance, even the Hilton's casino security guards asking if we were over 21 couldn't keep these underage fans away. Finally meeting Kristine the following year in Boston, we became aware of how special of a person she truly is. Throughout the years of getting to know her, we have shared experiences with her that we will cherish forever including dancing and choreographing with her at The Roxy in New York for New Year's Eve, performing in the middle of the ocean, and working on various projects. Now, 10 years later, as she prepares to release two new albums and a new single, we will be performing together in Boston on October 18th for Dena Cucci's Recovery Celebration. When we DJ that night, we will be sure to rock some of her hits like we always do and we will be dancing with her for a few of her top songs. Also, be on the lookout for a new mix we are doing for her which is something we are very excited about...never say never. In the music business, Kristine is a friend that we have had the longest and we want to share what she had to say when we recently interviewed her for our blog.
Perry Twins: You have inspired so many artists with your music. Are there any artists that have inspired you in your music or in life? Are there any songs in particular that have inspired you?
Trying to make sense of the world and how important it is to Feel What You Want It To Be – everyone has their own interpretation. Life is better when you feel your way through it rather than try to go with some sort of strategy. Some people become detached trying to climb whatever ladder they are trying to climb that they lose touch with their emotions and lose their spiritual side. Questions how you spend your time and who you spend it with and what you do with your life.

Erin Hamilton Controls The Billboard Club Chart!
This is her second consecutive club hit to top the chart this year. Originally released as a cover in the late 90's, The Flame '08 hit the #1 position after being rereleased with new remixes by huge producers including Tony Moran, Offer Nissim and the 10 Year Anniversary Mix by Solar City. Erin recently celebrated her 40th birthday party at The House Of Blues in LA with Scott Anderson of Solar City, Rafael M, Quinn Coleman, her publicist Jim Strzalkowski, her mom Carol Burnett and Casey Alva who DJ'ed the party! We all had a fun time celebrating Erin's special day and her new release, Control Yourself!
